Trash and Recycling
Bulk Trash
Bulk items are items that are more than 40 pounds and/or do not fit in a 32-gallon yellow City trash bag or Easy Carts. Common bulk items include furniture, appliances, and other larger household items. Consider donating usable items to local charities instead of throwing them away.
How to Schedule a Bulk Item Pickup (Mondays; excluding holidays)
Purchase a bulk item collection sticker.
$22.50 for regular bulk items; $44.25 for items containing Freon— like dehumidifiers, refrigerators, window air conditioner units, etc.
Stickers may be purchased online or at East Lansing City Hall (410 Abbot Rd.), the Department of Public Works (DPW) (1800 E. State Rd), or the East Lansing Hannah Community Center (819 Abbot Rd.).
Submit an online collection request form after receiving your bulk item sticker.
TRASH
The City of East Lansing collects trash from single-family homes and rental houses. Place trash in Easy Cart collection bins (rental properties provide them to tenants at no cost), or in yellow City trash bags and put them at the curb by 7:30 a.m. on your collection day.
Bins can be curbside from 8 p.m. the night before collection to 10 a.m. the day after. When storing your East Cart, it is required to be concealed at least halfway to the rear of your house or garage.
Apartment Complex Managers provide private trash service to tenants. Contact your manager for trash information or look for dumpsters at your complex.
RECYCLING
Keep East Lansing green by recycling! The City operates a free curbside recycling program for single-family households, rental homes and most small apartment complexes (20 units or less). The curbside recycling program takes place on a bi-weekly schedule. The East Lansing recycling cart should be placed at the curb by 7:30 a.m. and there is no need to sort or bag items since the program is single stream. Collection is divided into Green Week or Blue Week. View the collection schedule.
